Although our field of business is not the most carbon intensive compared to other industries, the gaming industry does have a significant impact on the climate. Emissions are generated all along the value chain, from manufacturing and data center energy usage, to e-sporting events.
For some years, Rovio’s goals for climate and environment have been simple:
minimize negative impacts in our value chain and maximize positive impacts by raising awareness for climate issues. Over the years, we have worked to recognize the total impact that our full value chain of operations has on our planet. We can say with confidence that today we have a near complete view of the matters we must actively manage when it comes to minimizing our impact on the planet.
Project Drawdown, an extensive database of climate solutions, has published a new guide for the gaming industry to fight the climate crisis. This guide has been developed together with gaming industry forerunners and leading advocates to create an important reference for those working in the gaming industry.
“A Drawdown-Aligned Framework for the Gaming Industry” provides real-life examples on how gaming companies can fight the climate crisis. For this framework Rovio has proudly shared our knowledge and provided real-life examples that we have gathered over the years on our own journey for a better planet. The framework was developed in a fruitful collaboration with experts from Unity, Ubisoft, Microsoft Xbox, the International Game Developers Association (IGDA®) Climate Special Interest Group, and the consultancy AfterClimate.
In climate science, ‘drawdown’ is referred to as the point in the future at which the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline, thereby halting catastrophic climate change. This new framework presents a high-level overview of how software gaming companies and their employees can drive impact where they are as we all approach this crucial goal—as quickly, safely, and equitably as possible.
We hope that this guide can be used to kickstart the climate journey of others or to figure out what are the best next steps to continue the work for a better and healthier planet.
